Food
Spain: here they eat a lot of carbs, fish, HAM, and cheese. They love olive oil and salt.
US: all of my teachers say that they love America because we have every kind of food to offer. I just like my access to fresh food in the US.
Spain: They eat very differently than most Americans. My schedule this past spring was somewhat similar to the Spanish schedule because of my classes so my transition to their way has been easy. They have a very light breakfast...coffee and toast...at about 8am. Lunch is at 2:30 or 3 and is the largest meal of the day. They have two plates...usually a veggie or soup dish and then a dish with meat and starches. Then they don't have dinner until 9:30 or 10. Dinner is not as large as lunch but still the same set up with two plates. Fruit is usually the dessert or yogurt. Also they rarely snack here. I think that is how the women here stay skinny.
US: We obviously have a different way of doing it. Eating at about 8am, 12pm, and 6pm with tons of snacking in between.
Greetings
Spain: Everyone and I mean everyone here does the two kiss thing. Today in class we were talking about this and my teacher was so shocked that we never do this even with our family. She told us that in Spain two kisses is a formal way of doing it and if you want to do something more intimate, like for a friend or mom, you just kiss the cheek once. She also said girl-girl guy-girl will do this but guy-guy will usually involve a pat on the back or hug..no kiss.
US: generally we do a handshake or hug. My teacher also thought it was odd that we wave hi because Spaniards only do this when saying goodbye
Conversation
Spain: when in conversation Spaniards all talk at the same time and the person that gets heard is the one that is speaking the loudest. haha this reminds me of when my family gets together.
US: Idk it is different and varies but generally people take turns but we do like to interrupt haha
Gender Roles
Spain: Women are usually the homemakers. Very rarely do men stay at home or help out around the house
US: still generally more women stay at home but there are more men in the US that help than in Spain.
Family Life
Spain: Kids live at home until they are 30ish or married
US: we get kicked out at 18 haha
Clothes
Spain: people here are so concerned about fashion. Designer like items can be purchased here for very cheap so people always dress nicely. Every Spaniard I have seen looks nice and never have on flip flops or sweats.
US: people don't usually care what they look like. especially at school.
