Sitting, waiting....and more waiting??
So yesterday…what did I do…oh yeah it was Monday so I got up early to head to my placement exam for the courses taught by the university of Salamanca. I was not looking forward to this exam because I thought it was stupid in the first place since we were already placed in levels while at U of M. I also was mad because as usual we had no idea about this placement exam before we came here. This whole program is so unorganized and yesterday was a testament to that statement. The exam consisted of 80 questions that needed to be answered in 30 minutes and a 1 minute oral section. After the exam I sat on the steps of a church nearby and read some of Atlas Shrugged. I only had a hundred pages left so I was eager to finish. At about 12 I headed to a welcoming ceremony that served wine and tapas. It is so funny how they do things here. Their idea of a welcoming party involves wine. Back in the states this would be considered crazy…students drinking wine with their professors. It makes me laugh. After the meet and greet I went back to my place to change and get my suit on. Katherine and I were planning on buying some fruit and veggies and having a picnic by the river in order to detox from all the unhealthy food we have been eating. We met at Dia the local supermarket and picked up some peaches, kiwis, pistachios, water, and a little dark chocolate…I was surprised at the price for this. It was only 5 euros for a lunch for two. We took a long round about way to the river and plopped down by the roman bridge. We sat and eat our food then hung out just chatting and occasionally picking up our books to read. I like talking with Katherine because she doesn’t judge me and we can still be friends even if we have different ideas about social or political issues. Janie joined us later and we all sat talking until we head to go back to the university to pay for our extra excursions and find out our placements. The whole placement process was very frustrating nobody knew where to find our scores and many people formed a line for no reason and nobody knew what the line was for…it gave me chills cause it reminded me of atlas shrugged and how the people in it would just blindly follow the crowd. Haha I know it wasn’t extreme like that but it just was eerie. During the chaos however I was able to meet some other international students one from the UK and two from Geneva, Switzerland. The girl from the UK, Emma, was very nice and we exchanged numbers. She is here studying for two weeks. She has an awesome british accent. The guys from Switzerland were nice. Katherine asked them if we had weird accents and they said that the girl American accent sounds fine and isn’t odd sounding but that American boys have a horrible accent. Haha I had never heard that before so I thought it was interesting. Finally Pedro led us to where we could find our scores. We had to sit in a classroom and wait. While waiting I just chatted with Katherine and a guy on our trip, Aaron, about books and such. I got my score and headed back. I was so tired of sitting around!!! When I got back I had dinner and then showered. I didn’t feel very well but I headed to meet Katherine and Rachel to buy tickets to Madrid for the weekend. I got the tickets then left cause I was not feeling the best. I went to bed and prayed I would feel better when I got up in the morning. I figured it was just from being in the hot sun all day.
